Open Up Group Reports Decline in Total Engineer Headcount but Increase in Utilization Rate in May 2026
TOKYO, Jun 26 (Pulse News Wire) – Open Up Group Inc. (2154.T) reported a decline in total engineer headcount and an increase in utilization rate for May 2026.
As of the end of May, the company had a total of 24,350 engineers, marking a decrease of 74 employees compared to April 2026. However, the overall utilization rate improved by 1.1 percentage points month-over-month to reach 93.4%. Year-over-year, the headcount decreased by 69 employees while the utilization rate increased slightly by 0.4 percentage points. Breaking down the figures further, the number of electrical/mechanical and IT engineers stood at 15,807 and 9,474 respectively, showing a reduction of 46 employees from April 2026. Despite the drop in headcount, their utilization rates rose by 0.8 percentage points to 94.5% and 96.4% for electrical/mechanical and IT engineers, respectively.
In contrast, construction engineers saw a smaller headcount reduction of 28 employees but experienced a more significant rise in utilization rate by 1.7 percentage points to 91.4%. The data also revealed a mixed trend among electrical/mechanical and IT engineers over the last year. While the headcount increased by 248 employees compared to May 2025, the utilization rate climbed by 1.3 percentage points to 94.5%. Construction engineers, however, faced a decline in headcount by 317 employees year-over-year, accompanied by a slight dip in utilization rate by 1.3 percentage points to 91.4%. Overall, Open Up Group Inc.’s monthly report highlights a strategic shift towards improving operational efficiency despite fluctuations in workforce size across various engineering categories.
