Foster Electric Company Reports Q1 Earnings, Addresses Tariffs and Cost Pressures

– Foster Electric Company, limited (6794.T) addressed key concerns related to its fiscal 2027 first quarter earnings released. The company explained ongoing tariff impacts and cost pressures affecting its speaker division's profitability.

Regarding tariffs, despite previous statements indicating their removal, some costs associated with inventory sales remain due to payments made prior to the suspension of US mutual tariffs based on IEEPA. Additionally, delays in recovering funds from customers rather than government refunds have caused timing discrepancies but are expected to normalize throughout the fiscal year. The impact of potential additional US tariffs is currently being assessed. Cost increases driven by rising raw material prices in the Middle East have led to higher expenses for Foster Electric. While the company has secured stable supply through increased inventory purchases, it continues to face challenges and is working to mitigate future risks by prioritizing procurement and requesting customer support to avoid delivery delays.

Currency fluctuations also affected the company’s operations. With more transactions conducted in Renminbi for sourcing materials, the appreciation of the Renminbi against the dollar has increased exchange costs. To address this, Foster Electric plans to shift Renminbi-based purchasing and dollar-selling transactions to other locations, focusing China operations on local business to reduce currency mismatches. Further measures such as fixed-cost compression and active hedging strategies are also under consideration. In addressing the significant decline in ESTec’s first-quarter performance compared to the same period last year, Foster Electric attributed the drop to reduced sales to Chinese manufacturers and lower revenue from high-margin products.

Despite the downturn, the company maintains its initial forecast for the full-year outlook, noting steady progress in premium branding initiatives within automotive businesses and planned contributions from new ventures.
