Hokko Chemical Industry Reports Benzene Leak at Okayama Plant

– Hokko Chemical Industry CO.,LTD. (4992.T) disclosed that benzene-containing wastewater leaked from its Okayama plant on July 14 at approximately 4:15 PM.

The leak was confirmed near the foundation of the Yoshino Coast seawall, causing concern among nearby residents, fishermen, and administrative authorities. The company deeply apologizes for any inconvenience caused and is working diligently to identify the cause and prevent future incidents under guidance from local government agencies. The leak originated from the Synthetic Factory 6 and Synthetic Factory 7 within the Okayama plant.

Initial reports indicated the presence of organic compounds such as benzene, toluene, and xylene in the leaking water. The volume and concentration of the chemicals remain under investigation. Hokko immediately halted operations at the affected factories and ceased the use of drainage pits throughout the facility.

Regarding the impact on the company's performance, Hokko stated that it would promptly disclose any findings affecting its consolidated earnings once determined.
