Hokkaido Electric Power Sets Tsunami Barrier Completion for August 2027

– Hokkaido Electric Power Company, incorporated (9509.S) announced on July 30 that it has finalized the completion date for the tsunami barrier construction at the Tomari Nuclear Power Plant to August 2027. Previously, the company had stated that the completion date was undetermined but began construction in March 2024.

The barrier, which stands at 19 meters above sea level and utilizes a robust rock-bed support structure anchored directly into solid bedrock, was designed based on recommendations from the Nuclear Regulation Authority's review in February 2024. Since the start of construction, various measures have been implemented to minimize interference with other safety works within the narrow confines of the power plant site. However, after thorough examination of the overall project timeline, the company decided to set the completion date to ensure safety and quality standards. The tsunami barrier extends approximately 1,200 meters and spans up to 30 meters wide.

Construction costs amount to ¥106.7 billion. Further adjustments to the budget due to the revised schedule are currently being evaluated. Hokkaido Electric remains committed to advancing the project safely while seeking continued understanding and cooperation from local communities and stakeholders. Any potential impacts on operations or finances will be disclosed promptly should they arise.
